Ropers cash in at Newport Rodeo

NEWPORT – Ropers got the biggest checks at the 76th annual Newport Rodeo, which wrapped up its three-night run Saturday, June 28.

Roger Nonella of Redmond, Oregon, won the All-Around cowboy award at the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association sanctioned rodeo.

He placed third in the steer roping ($2,331) and fourth in the tie down roping ($1,296), collecting $3,627 in all. Six-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier Russel Cardoza of Terrebonne, Oregon won $2,243, placing third in the team roping ($1,502) with partner Jake Raley of Ellensburg and sixth in the tie down roping ($741).

The steer roping took place Saturday during the slack, with ropers competing in three go rounds.

Clay Long of Stephenville, Texas won the event and $3,367, winning the average ($1,554) with a time of 39.7 on three. He also won the third go round and placed second in the first round.

Probably the rodeo’s most accomplished ropers, Ellensburg brothers Riley Minor and Brady Minor, won the team roping.

Between them they have qualified for the NFR more than 20 times and won more than $4 million in the PRCA. Their time of 4.6 seconds got the Newport win and $2,032 each. The tie down roping was won by Jake Pratt of Ellensburg with a time of 9.2 seconds. He won $2,130.

There was a tie for first in the breakaway roping between Alissa Erickson of Snelling, California and Celie Salmond of Choteau, Montana. They pocketed $2,142 each for their 2.4 second runs.

There was also a tie for first in the steer wrestling. Cole Detton of Great Falls, Montana and Colin Wolfe of Wenatchee, both throwing their steers in 4.5 seconds, each collecting $1,794.

The barrel racing was won by another Montanan, Tammy Carpenter of Great Falls. She earned $2,069 for a 15.045 second run.

In the riding events, Mason Yancy of Elgin, Oregon won the bareback riding with an 82.5-point ride on Tiki Torch Friday night. Yancy also won the bareback riding at the Crooked River Roundup in Prineville, Oregon the same week. He won $1,480 at Newport.

The saddle bronc riding was won by Blaine Pengelly of Caroline, Alberta, who won $1,839 with an 82.5 score on Painted Smile.

Kyler Finley-McDonald of Ronan, Montana won the bull riding with a 79.5-point ride on Mountain Dew. He pocketed $2,051, including ground money. Ground money is paid when there aren’t enough qualified rides for all the places. The remaining money is divided equally among those who competed in the event.
