Vehicles driving southbound on Highway 2 after a delay in traffic, Thursday, July 10 in Newport. The delays were caused by a lane closure for construction by the Washington State Department of Transportation on Highway 2 northbound, with alternating traffic and a pilot car between milepost 332 and 333.5. During each delay, vehicles stopped in a line that started by Highway 2 and Fifth Avenue and ended several blocks away on South Washington Avenue in downtown Newport. More construction is expected toward the end of July until September, when WSDOT will repave and restripe about 4 miles of Highway 2 between Newport and South Shore Road by Diamond Lake.
