Priest River track continues winning streak

DEER PARK — Spartan track and field continue to show their mettle by winning more medals at the Glenn Wolfe Invite in Deer Park on Friday, April 4.

Nike Porinchok took first place in discus and second in shot put and Brayden Lamanna won first in the1600-meter race and third in the 800-meter. Luccas Simcox medaled third in long jump and Lizzie McCracken won third in the girls’ 800-meter.

Due to spring break, Priest River was missing several athletes with only 25 kids competing, according to coach Jared Hughes. However, both teams competed well.

“The boys team finished great taking fifth out of the 28 teams competing while the girls (who had a much smaller turnout) finished in the top half in 13th,” Hughes says.

Leading the way for the girls were seniors Kylee Swoboda and Lizzie McCracken with 11 points each. Senior Brayden Lamanna scored 19 and junior Niki Porinchok 18 to lead the boys.

“Both of these boys came home with at least one gold medal and continue to be leaders on our team,” Hughes says.

According to Hughes, another indicator to gauge success at meets is the percentage of athletes with at least one season or lifetime best.

“We had 22 of the 25 athletes or 88% do that on Saturday,” Hughes says. “The goal is always 100%, but this is a good percentage to show the hard work they are putting in.”

Next up for the Spartans will be the Lake Pend Oreille Invite on Saturday, April 12 at Sandpoint High School. The bus leaves at 8:45 a.m.

The Spartans are also reaching out to the community for help running the 28th Annual Priest River Invite on Saturday, April 19. “A successful meet can only happen with volunteers from the staff, parents and community members,” Hughes says.

To volunteer, contact the Priest River Lamanna Junior/Senior High School Athletics Office at 208-4481211.
