NEWPORT — At Compass Rose Tattoo, it’s not just the ink that’s permanent — it’s the impact.
Owners Anthony and Amber Gutierrez opened Compass Rose Tattoo on March 1 at 357 W. 3rd St. in Newport with a clear mission: to create a Christ-centered space that merges high-quality tattooing with genuine connection and ministry. More than a studio, Compass Rose is a place where clients are treated with love, dignity and care — and often walk away with more than just a custom piece of art.
“Permanent ink, sure, but we’re more than the ink,” Amber said. “We’re dealing with people’s souls … The Gospel is always shared.”
Anthony, the studio’s lead artist, brings over 20 years of experience in the tattoo industry. He specializes in American traditional and neo-traditional but is well versed in many different styles. He aims to design custom tattoos, but is willing to work with clients on the ideas and references they bring.
A consultation is required for every tattoo. Compass Rose wants to know the client’s vision for their art. “What do you want? Why do you want that? What’s the story behind it?” Amber said. “The consult is absolutely necessary to truly bring the client’s vision to life.”
Amber, the business manager, oversees operations, marketing and customer care. She describes her husband’s artistic gift as a blessing, both to their clients and their ministry. The studio operates by appointment only, with tattoos starting at a $100 minimum and billed at $140 per hour.
But the mission goes deeper than skin. Guided by Proverbs 3:5–6, they proclaim to be a “God said so” shop. The Gutierrezes use Compass Rose as a platform to love their community and reflect the character of Jesus.
Anthony doesn’t tattoo anything that contradicts the gospel message. “There’s often a stigma around tattoo shops — things like sex, drugs, demonic themes — but you won’t find that here,” Amber said. “We want this to be a space where everyone feels safe, welcome and valued.”
Originally from Yuma, Arizona, the Gutierrez family moved to Newport after years of visiting the Colville National Forest during Arizona’s sweltering summers. The opportunity to relocate came when Amber was offered a position as a registered respiratory therapist at Newport Hospital. Their family includes two young boys, Oliver and Noah, as well as Amber’s mother, Phyllis Shaffer. Anthony also works full-time as a fifth-grade teacher at House of the Lord Christian Academy, the school affiliated with their church.
The name Compass Rose isn’t about a flower — it refers to a navigation tool, symbolizing the direction they believe God has given them for their lives and business.
Their vision includes expanding services to offer piercings and permanent makeup. The shop features three additional rooms — one designated for permanent makeup and two more that will hopefully host other local service providers. A second tattoo artist will join the team in April, and the couple plans to accept up to two tattoo apprentices starting in June.
Their passion for building relationships goes beyond tattoos. They’re actively involved in local events, fundraisers and partnerships with other small businesses, aiming to be a life-giving presence in the Newport community.
“We just want to love on people, love on the community and be reflections of Jesus.” Anthony said. “It’s Matthew 4:19 … We’re fishing.”
