NEWPORT — The Grizzly track and field team hosted the annual Barry Sartz Relay Saturday, April 26, with several Newport athletes cracking the top 10 in numerous events.

“It was a beautiful day for a track meet and the first really warm day the athletes got to compete in,” coach Levi Litowitz said. “These relays are mainly to have fun and to honor Barry for everything he did for this program, and this was a great day for that. Overall, I was very happy with our team’s performance … you got to see the entire team come together and compete; it was fun to watch.”

The boys’ 800-meter relay team took first, consisting of Lucas Croswhite, Dax Hansen, Damien Hamberg and Tanner Rheinford, finished at 1:45.7. The girls’ 4x100 relay team won first, with Maelee Jurgens, Addison Stigall, Savannah Garris and Aurelia Johnson finishing at 1:00.6. Garris, Hailey Davison, Olivia Collins and Sophia Peaker took first in the girls’ 1600-meter relay at 4:49.4. Collins also won first in the girls’ 1600-meter race at 5:46.34.

Tanner Rheinford also won sixth in the 1600-meter race with a time of 5:13.81. Rayben Jurgens won fifth in the shot put, throwing 38 feet, 8 inches. He went on to earn second in the discus, throwing 128’, 1”. Croswhite was second in the javelin throwing 123’, 4”, followed by Hamberg in third at 120’.

Dusty McDaniel was first in girls’ discus, throwing 94’, 6.5”. She also took second in the girls’ shot put, throwing 31’, 9”.

First place in the triple jump was Hailey Davison at 31’, 4.25”.

Aurelia Johnson placed third in the high jump at 4’6” followed by Sophie Peaker in fourth at 4’.4”. Maelee Jurgens finished third in the long jump at 13’, 7.25”.

Next up, Newport hosts a track and field meet at Ellerswick Field Thursday, May 1 (TBA). Newport heads to Colfax for the NE 2B Team Championships Tuesday, May 6.
