Concussion calls game for Grizzlies

Goalkeeper recovered

NEWPORT — A concussion to Newport High School’s goalkeeper brought a soccer game to an early end Thursday, April 24 at Ellersick Field.

Junior Jack Youk was accidentally kneed in the face by a Northwest Christian player in the second half of the game with 16 minutes left. Youk fell to his knees and began to bleed profusely from his nose. He was helped off the field by coach Nick Tucker and assistant coach Pablo Wenceslao and laid on his side with his leg elevated.

According to Tucker, Youk lost consciousness soon after leaving the field and emergency medical services were contacted. An ambulance arrived and took Youk to Newport Hospital. He was discharged last Friday morning.

Due to his injury, Youk will be unable to play sports for the rest of the school year. The game was called early due to the injury and the visiting Crusaders (9-3, 6-0) beat the Grizzlies (2-9, 2-6) 4-1.

Earlier last week Medical Lake (7-4-0, 5-2) defeated visiting Newport 5-1 Tuesday, April 22.

Newport traveled to Riverside Tuesday, April 29 after deadline. Results from that game will be in next week’s newspaper. Coming up, Newport hosts Colville Thursday, May 1 at 4 p.m.
