POST FALLS – The Spartans had a light week as a select group took part in the Meet of Champions at Post Falls High School Thursday, May 1. To qualify for this meet, athletes had to be in the top 16 entries for individual and relay events. There was no team scoring. The Spartans took 18 athletes in 22 different events.
All the athletes competed well with many personal bests and several medalists. Once again, Brayden Lamanna showcased his amazing talent and hard work by winning both the 1600-meter and 3200-meter races. He lowered his own school record by about a second in the 1600-meter by running 4:26.46.
Niki Porinchok continues to do will in the throwing events finishing 2nd in the discus and 5th in the shot put.
Ian Lamanna had a great day in the pole vault finishing 3rd while tying his personal best of 12’6”.
Kylie Swoboda had another great competition in the high jump clearing 4’10 and tying for 3rd place. She also anchored Priest River’s third place finish in the Girls 800-meter Medley relay. She was joined by Haley Braae, Jasmine Stark and Ashlyn Korff.
Lizzie McCracken ran an outstanding 800-meter taking almost 1.5 seconds off her personal best to move to third best in school history.
“There were several other athletes that may not have medaled but had great days lowering their personal bests,” coach Jared Hughes said.
Next up for the Spartans will be the Central Idaho League Championships on Friday and Saturday, May 9-10. This meet will determine the district champions and is the qualifying meet for the 3A State Championships the following week.
