YOUR OPINION

I loved watching Pope Francis over the years. I have to admit how appalled I was to watch the president of our United States represent our country and act like a horse’s ass in front of the world. What the hell is wrong with this fool? Every time someone goes to a funeral they should know how to dress. If they want people to dress happily they will say that, if they want them to dress in a certain attire like a black suit and a black tie they will tell them that, and I believe they did. But Trump, oh no, he couldn’t do that because the show has to be all about him. Not the person that died, all about himself. Was he trying to prove that he can do whatever he wants? His behavior and actions were so appalling it embarrassed me so bad. I find him disgusting even more than I did before come and that’s hard to do! Now you see him trying to get himself elected again for a third term. He was appalling enough the first time, he’s even worse now. Pull your heads out of your asses before he destroys everything that we hold dear.

Trump administration

ignoring law

In a letter posted to the editor on April 30 this question (paraphrased) was posed: If a person is in the U.S. illegally, should they be accorded due process in an attempt to deport? If you are an American who believes in the rule of law and the Constitution’s Bill of Rights, then the answer has to be an emphatic yes. Anything less is a tacit approval of totalitarianism.

And as to the alleged gang member at the center of this debate it must be reiterated that they were under a judge’s order not to deport. You may not like the individual or the courts decisions, but this is no reason to deny or subvert the law. As to the claim in this letter that the current president was overwhelmingly elected, I don’t consider a victory of 1.4% of the votes to be all that overwhelming. Be that as it may I accept the conclusion of the election. That doesn’t mean I have to agree with the blatant racism and pathetic need for retribution of this administration. I consider it my duty as an American citizen to voice my displeasure and disgust with the way this administration is ignoring the Rule Of Law.

Wavelengths are who we are

When reading the news of the day, it is wise to be aware that humans, at our core, are light. And light is comprised of wavelengths.

And wavelengths divided down the length are both positive and negative. We are both positive and negative. It is impossible for us to be one without the other. Wavelength is the essence of who we are. And who we are together.

When we read the news, we can go either positive or negative.

Sometimes we like to fool ourselves into thinking we are just positive, or negative, but we are fooling ourselves. We are both. Maybe we can’t perceive our own opposite, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Maybe it is subconscious, maybe it is in another dimension, but it is there.

Do you find yourself swinging on your wave as you read the intellectual opinions of others? Does that make you part of their wavelength? How does that differ from a wavelength of your own creation?

Or even better, a wavelength in co-creation with Mother Nature, like in a garden? What does a wave of co-creation feel like? Isn’t our own creation always better than reaction? Doesn’t that make us better together?

Washington In Crisis

I tire of seeing all the letters from peevish Pete and his ilk complaining about the state of affairs in Washington, D.C., and their TDS, but no concerns and/or complaints regarding the state of Washington.

Is it possibly because Democrats run this state?

Let’s highlight some affordability statistics about this liberal state: Compared to the national average, Washington is the third-most expensive state for residents.

Washington has the third-highest gas prices (37% higher than the national average) and the fifth-most expensive gas tax.

A recent WalletHub study analyzing 46 key metrics ranked Washington as the fourth-worst state to retire.

Home, auto, and health insurance rates have seen double-digit increases year after year. Last year, the office of the insurance commissioner approved average hikes of 21.7% for home, 17.5% for auto, and 10.7% for health insurance.

According to the latest data, 35% of Washington households are living paycheck to paycheck.

Washington ranks as one of the most expensive states in the nation for groceries, with households spending an average of $10,200 a year — nearly 25% more than the national average. That represents the sixth-highest grocery bill in the country.

Waiting on Solutions

Each week the Miner allows folks from all walks of life to voice their opinion on most any subject. That is good for America. I enjoy other people’s point of view. My question is of what value there is with people week after week complaining and yet not offering any solutions. The TDS crowd takes the opposite view with regard to any proposals or actions by President Trump. None of these citizens can point to their so-called leadership for answers other than obstruction.

One would think that at least occasionally the letter writers would have their own ideas. I guess I must not be the only one wondering why these people offer only unproductive comments. Recent polling shows only 28% of Americans approve of the Democrat party.

Try having some answers before speaking. A little “hint,” the last four years should enlighten you to what does not work.

Hold the line for Trump

Trump’s first 100 Days in office was the most consequential in American history. The country elected a man to knock over a table and that’s exactly what he’s done.

He is a businessman. His Cabinet Secretaries are ‘rattling cages.’

Departments are undergoing much-needed deep-cleaning.

Harmeet Dhillon is taking a wrecking ball to the Civil Rights division at DOJ. She is reassigning lawyers to prosecute antisemitism and over 100 have left. ICE arrested 1,100 illegals in FL and over 100 in CO in one weekend. Secured borders. The WI Judge who was arrested for obstructing ICE just lost her judicial power by WI’s Supreme Court. When asked how high she will go, Bondi replied “to SCOTUS if necessary. Anyone who breaks Federal law risks prosecution.” Remember “no one is above the law” (Trump arrest)?

U.S. and Ukraine sign mineral rights deal. Countries are lining up to make trade deals. Inflation and prices are beginning to fall.

Markets are adjusting to tariffs.

DOGE continues rooting out waste, fraud and abuse. DOJ and DOE have launched investigations into WA State education, hopefully followed by DOGE.

77M Americans voted for this.

Patience, Trump can’t fix the country overnight. Hold the line.

Levy dollars necessary, not frivolous

Now we’re into May. We are less than three weeks from voting on the levy. I still witness comments about the levy that are false. Again I mention to go to a board meeting or visit with a Trustee or the superintendent to gain knowledge that is fact. None of these people will try to pull wool over your eyes. They will prove to you that the proposed levy dollars are not frivolous. Just bare bones necessities. The tax assessment is $43.41 per $100,000 of valuation. That is approximately half the amount asked for in the last levy proving that they are not asking for money that is not necessary. This will save having to close more schools.

Please consider how important a quality education is. It’s good for the students, the community and everyone involved. PLEASE VOTE YES.

Ernie and Helen Schoeffel Priest River Making rural America expensive, not great

Our congressman isn’t going to get school and road federal funding restored but I see Newport has a new SRO policeman to patrol the school hallways with a gun, taser, mace, handcuffs and a club. If DOGE were here, the cop would be the first staff layoff. Instead, we are going to lose teachers and turn our roads from asphalt to gravel. Hope you like the dust and cracked windshields!

The Miner listed funding cuts for several local government programs. What’s happening is that federal spending is being transferred to rural governments. You are going to pay more for schools, roads, EMS, homeless kids, access to public lands and public health. The federal grants we live on are drying up. Our rural America isn’t going to be great again, just more expensive.

When is the great orange leader going to announce a world-class golf resort for our community? Better yet, one of those federal detention prisons for all the people he is going to round up and punish. I am hoping for a private cell. The new SRO could transfer and be a prison guard.

I recognize Trump’s switch-and-bait scheme transferring the cost from federal to rural communities. Pete Scobby Newport

The real ‘Trickle-Down Theory’

There are those who read about the cuts the Trump administration is making to Federal agencies and think, “It really doesn’t affect me.” Let me call your attention to an article in last week’s Miner titled, “Local campgrounds reducing services, one closing.” The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers is reducing services and closing one campground because of the unbridled cuts to funds and staff initiated by Elon Musk in the name of DOGE.

Those cuts do affect us here in Pend Oreille County as well as in rural areas all over the country. As the cited article states, these parks generate over $17 million for the local economy. How many of the estimated 450,000 visitors will go elsewhere because of the closures and staffing reductions?

This is but one small example of the mean-spirited and short-sighted actions of the Trump-Musk team. You can be sure we will feel each and every cut at the local level. This is the real “Trickle-Down Theory.” It was never good as an economic model and it certainly isn’t good for our local economy.
