Memorial Day

Cars move slowly up the winding road to the upper level of the cemetery that overlooks the city.

Backdrop of green stretches enhancing tiny flags that dot the landscape here and there. People crisscross the terrain looking for familiar landmarks to place the flowers brought by loving hands.

For the horticulturally challenged bouquets from local merchants provide thoughtful tribute.

A small black hat firmly secured with a hat pin sits on Grandma’s head.

Chunky heeled shoes that lace enclose her feet. She carries a canning jar filled with sweet, hand-picked flowers and carefully maneuvers her way to your grave site as we children, awed, find the cemetery vibrantly alive.
