NEWPORT — Pend Oreille County has an opening on the Board of Equalization.
This opening is for a citizen interested in serving as an alternate member to complete a three-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2026.
The BOE functions as an appeals board to hear tax assessment appeals and to act as an equalization board. Metaline Falls Council position open
METALINE FALLS — After the acceptance of council member Jeremy Hampson’s resignation, Position 2 on the Metaline Falls Town Council is now open.
Anyone interested in the position should talk to either Mayor Tara Leininger or any of the other council members. The mayor and all council members’ positions require an individual to be at least 18 years old, a registered voter and a Metaline Falls resident. A $50 stipend is paid for attending each monthly council meeting.
Two positions on the council — Position 1 held by Fran Maxwell and Position 4 held by Blake McAnerin — are up for re-election. Both are running unopposed. The mayor’s position has three candidates as of May 20: Leininger, Sherice McAnerin and Walter Minsal.
County honorees recognized at annual WASA awards
NEWPORT — The Newport/ Priest River Rotary Club was one of three Pend Oreille County honorees recognized during the 2025 Washington Association of School Administrators Awards Celebration.
The club received a Community Leadership Award for its enduring commitment to supporting students, staff and schools in the Newport School District. In addition to awarding scholarships to graduating seniors, the club has ex- panded its support through classroom grants, student recognition programs and staff appreciation efforts.
The other two honorees were the FFA Boosters of Riverside School District, collectively known as TEAM Riverside, and Mikaela Davis, a Riverside High School junior. They received a Community Leadership Award and Student Leadership Award, respectively.
The celebration was hosted by the NorthEast Washington Educational Service District May 2 in Spokane. Held in partnership with WASA, the annual event celebrates community members, students and educators whose leadership strengthens public education across Eastern Washington, according to a NEWESD news release.
