NEWPORT — As the weather warms up, the Newport Community Garden Committee is excited for another season of growing and learning with the community. The community is invited to stop by at 10 a.m. Friday, June 6 for a planting day to get the season started.

The committee is also continuing an educational series that started in 2022. After securing funding for the garden project, the garden was created as an outdoor educational space for anyone to enjoy. Located at the Newport Library, it is not your typical community garden. The committee began offering classes each month, with topics such as soil basics and composting.

While there will be more details to come, this summer’s classes will include pollinators in July and seed-saving in August.

The Newport Community Garden is a collaborative effort with committee members from the Pend Oreille Conservation District, the Newport Library (Pend Orielle County Library District), Friends of the POC Library District, Washington State University Extension and the Master Gardeners/ SNAP-Ed program.

For this year’s supplies and programming, the committee is relying on funding from community donations, as well a second grant from the National Association of Conservation Districts’ Urban Agriculture Conservation program.

Anyone who would like to join us on June 6 is welcome, and it is recommended to bring some gloves and maybe a trowel (we will have some extra tools on hand). The committee is supplying all the plants as well.
