NEWPORT — A 71-year-old man who went missing from his residence about 6 miles northwest of Newport May 17 was found deceased.
The disappearance of Denny Salvatori was the topic of a Nixle notice from the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office Thursday, May 22. The Sheriff’s Office was seeking information about the whereabouts of Salvatori, who was last seen without shoes. He reportedly left the residence on foot and had dementia, according to the Nixle notice.
“He was found deceased,” Sheriff Glenn Blakeslee said Tuesday, May 27. Blakeslee said it didn’t take long for deputies to find Salvatori once deputies started looking for him. The Spokane County Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death, he said. “It was an unfortunate circumstance,” Blakeslee said.

Spring arrives in Metaline Falls
METALINE FALLS — It’s spring and the flowers are out in Metaline Falls, said Mayor Tara Leininger in a May 20 news release.
Leininger thanked Monte Rice and Nancy Kiss for keeping the city watered and blooming by taking care of flowers, trash and bathrooms. She also thanked the Cutter Theatre for its plant sale.
Joining the city’s maintenance team are volunteers Lynn and Tom Barnes, who are helping keep the Metaline Falls Visitors Center open. Lynn Barnes is with Friends of the Library and takes care of the book sale as well.
With the Last Stop Ice Cream Shop now open, it is starting to feel like summer, Leininger wrote in the news release. She reminded residents to make sure visitors to Metaline Falls feel at home and wanting to return, and to contact city clerk/treasurer Edward Estrada with problems or observations.
Leininger’s position is up for re-election, with three candidates: Leininger, Sherice McAnerin and Walter Minsal.
