A committee for the dedication of Albeni Falls Dam had their schedule of events nearly complete.

60 years ago 1965

Plans were made for a county wide ground squirrel control program to entail the spreading of strychnine-poisoned oats on farmlands.

The Newport City Council was studying television cable franchises.

State Attorney General John J. O’Connell was scheduled to speak at the Selkirk High School commencement, the first such ceremony at the new school.

The Kaniksu National Forest planned to offer 11 timber sales totaling 37.5 million board feet during June.

50 years ago 1975

The Ford shake mill at Penrith was destroyed by fire, putting 32 employees out of work. The loss was estimated at over $100,000.

Stan Bluff resigned as Kalispel tribal chairman.

Chief Jack Henderson and Stevens County authorities confiscated 50 marijuana plants in the Horseshoe Lake area.

40 years ago 1985

The Town of Cusick emerged as the ball carrier in a bit of financial razzle- dazzle aimed at clearing the way to construct the Ponderay Newsprint plant south of Usk.

Mayor Paul Haas applied for $1.5 million in state funds to tie the paper mill into the Cusick and Usk water systems.

30 years ago 1995

Children were asked in the Community Comments, “If you could do one thing for fun this summer – something you’d like to do but don’t think you’ll be able to do – what would that be?”

“Go to Disneyland,” Sam Palmisano, 8, of Newport said. “I’d like to go on rides and see Goofy and Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.”

“I would like to go to Alaska to see my cousins. My sister’s going there,” said Brittany Lewis, 8, of Newport. Brittany added that she would like to go to Disneyland.

“I’d like to go to Wonderland,” said Tony Palmisano, 8, of Newport. “I’ve never been there, but I’d like to see what it’s like.”

“Probably riding on a jet ski,” said Tess Matney, 9, of Newport.

“Go to Jamaica,” said Allen Strausser, 12, of Newport. “It would be fun to learn about their way of life and their habitat.”

20 years ago 2005

The Colville National Forest leadership team will review recently proposed cuts to the 2006 budget. The plan could cut from 30-50 percent out of some operations. That would mean that a third of the forest staff would be cut in 2006. In Pend Oreille County, they manage 527,000 acres with 30 fulltime employees and some seasonal staff. The cuts are an early response to the Bush administration’s proposed 2006 budget.

10 years ago 2015

Newport High School sophomore Sydney Salesky competed at the Washington State High School Equestrian Team competition, winning third in the Canadian Flag relay race.

The West Bonner County School District passed its one-year, $3 million supplemental maintenance and operations levy by 11 votes, 1,322 to 1,311.

Classified ads offered a mobile home 10 miles from Newport for rent for $750 a month and a two-bedroom, one-bath house with a fenced yard and washer and dryer for $625 a month.
