The rising costs of long-term care: A growing challenge

Long-term care has become a critical concern for families across the United States, especially in Washington state, where aging populations and increased demand for care have driven up costs. Whether it’s in-home assistance or nursing home care, the financial burden of long-term care can be staggering, leaving many families struggling to make ends meet. The Cost of In-Home Care In-home care provides essential support for individuals who wish to remain in the comfort of their own homes. Caregivers assist with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, meal preparation, and medication management. While this option offers the advantage of maintaining independence, it comes with a steep price.

In Washington, the average cost of in-home care is approximately $6,000 per month for 44 hours of weekly care. For those requiring round-the-clock assistance, these expenses can more than double. Over the course of a year, families can expect to spend upwards of $70,000 on in-home care alone. This financial strain often forces families to make difficult decisions, such as cutting back on other expenses or dipping into retirement savings.

The Cost of Nursing Homes Nursing home care is even more expensive. For individuals who require 24-hour medical supervision and assistance with daily activities, nursing homes provide critical services but at a premium cost. In Washington State, the average monthly cost for a private room in a nursing home is over $10,000, translating to more than $120,000 annually.

For many families, these costs are simply unaffordable without significant savings or financial assistance. To cover these expenses, individuals often have to “spend down” their assets to qualify for Medicaid, which can mean losing decades of savings and financial security.

The Financial Strain on Families Long-term care costs don’t just affect individuals in need of services—they place a significant burden on entire families. Family members often step into caregiving roles to avoid the high cost of professional care, sacrificing their own careers, income, and per- sonal well-being. According to AARP, unpaid family caregivers provide over $470 billion in care annually across the U.S., often at great personal cost.

Even with family caregivers, the out-of-pocket expenses for supplies, medical equipment, and part-time professional care add up quickly. These hidden costs create additional pressure, particularly for middle-income families who don’t qualify for government assistance but can’t afford private insurance or out-ofpocket expenses.

The Impact of Rising Costs As the population ages and the demand for long-term care increases, costs are expected to rise even further. Factors contributing to this trend include: Labor Shortages: A growing shortage of professional caregivers is driving up wages, which are passed on to families.

Increased Demand: As life expectancy rises, more individuals require care for longer periods, adding to the financial strain.

Medical Advancements: While advancements in medical care improve quality of life, they often come with higher costs.

The Need for a Solution These rising costs highlight the urgent need for solutions that make long-term care accessible and affordable. Programs like Washington State’s WA Cares Fund aim to address these challenges by providing financial support for in-home care, nursing services, and other essential resources. Without such programs, many families face the prospect of financial hardship, reduced savings, and difficult caregiving decisions.

Long-term care is a reality for many, and as costs continue to climb, it’s essential to explore new ways to support individuals and families in need.
