Two dead after two local collisions

NEWPORT — Two people died in two separate vehicle collisions in Pend Oreille and Bonner Counties last week.

The first was on May 28, 8 miles south of Newport in Pend Oreille County.

At around 8:32 p.m., Nancy L. Strand, 87, of Deer Park was stopped on Farrs Lane at the intersection of Highway 2. Nelson L. Antoniuk, 58, of Nine Mile Falls was northbound on Highway 2 approaching Farrs Lane when Strand failed to yield and pulled out in front of Antoniuk’s vehicle. After they collided, Strand’s vehicle came to rest on the northbound lane, Antoniuk’s in the northbound ditch. Both vehicles were totaled.

Strand was transported to Newport Hospital and Health Services, then transferred to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Antoniuk, who was injured, was transported to Newport Hospital.

The second vehicle collision was on May 31 on Spirit Lake Cutoff Road near Beare Road in Bonner County.

At around 10:19 a.m., a Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by a 70-year-old male from Hauser was traveling northbound on Spirit Lake Cutoff Road. The male failed to negotiate a curve and lost control prior to crossing the center dividing line into the southbound lane, colliding with a water truck traveling southbound on Spirit Lake Cutoff Road. He was wearing a helmet but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic in both directions on Spirit Lake Cutoff Road was stopped for about three hours to allow emergency responders to assist those involved in the collision.
