Name: Sally Whiting Thornburg Age: 70s Town: Priest River Artistic medium: Water media, collage, assemblage Question: Why do you make this type of art?
Answer: I enjoy mixing up different mediums to create a deeper expression than just flat preferring one medium. I also enjoy teaching others how to make mixed media collage pieces.
Q: What does your artwork represent?
A: Experimental ideas, impressions.
Q: What inspires you?
A: Colors in gardens, nature, impressionist paintings.
Q: How do you make art? A: I get an idea, often do a sample drawing of the concept, think about the colors I want to use, layers, collage, etc. Often, I start by making marks with color sticks, watercolor crayons, just to loosen up. I follow several artists on YouTube and take classes online to learn new ways to incorporate my ideas into art pieces.
Q: What does your art mean to you?
A: I am compelled to create art. I get ideas and I have to work them out. Working on my art is great stress relief and brings me a lot of joy—I create for me and I don’t worry about impressing others or whether the piece will sell or not.
Q: Do you have any exhibits/ shows coming up?
A: I have pieces at the Vessel Coop Gallery in Newport. I also have art in the community with my Evergreen Art group (Evergreen Art Association). I may put some artwork in Art On The Green in Coeur d’Alene.
