Thursday ‘Good Trouble’ demonstration planned Thursday

NEWPORT – Another protest objecting to the actions of the Trump administration will take place in Newport Thursday, July 17, from 9-10:30 a.m. at The Big Wheel in Newport.

It is part of a nationwide day of action called “Good Trouble Lives On.”

Retired pastor Becky Anderson will give a free talk at Create Center for the Arts on Newport from 6:30-7:30 p.m. that night. She will be talking about her experience on the Presbyterian Church’s Civil Rights Legacy Tour she took in 2024.

“Together let’s look at some historic times when people like Democratic Congressman John Lewis made ‘good trouble’ in raising awareness of injustice and seeking solutions,” she says in a handout publicizing the event.

Lewis was a civil rights activist before he was elected to Congress from Georgia. He was one of the organizers of the 1963 March on Washington.

“Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble,” he Tweeted in part in 2018. That’s the basis of the “Good Trouble Lives On” name of the demonstration.
