NEWPORT — There will be plenty of action when the Newport Rough Stock Rodeo takes place Saturday, Aug. 2, at 7 p.m., with cowboys and cowgirls competing for $15,000 in added money, along with the $100 entry fees.
The event features the regular rodeo riding events – bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding, along ranch bronc riding and women’s barrel racing.
Probably the most well-known competitor is Kaila Mussell of Chilliwack, British Columbia. Ian Tyson wrote “Saddle Bronc Girl,” about Mussell, the first women to become a Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association saddle bronc rider. Mussell has won the Newport Rodeo before and was inducted into the Cowgirl Hall of Fame in 2024.
The Rough Stock Rodeo isn’t a PRCA sanctioned event, it’s an open-to-the-world contest, unlike Newport’s PRCA rodeo in June.
Rodeo Association President Ray Hanson said Saturday’s event will have some PRCA competitors, though, as the Sandpoint PRCA Rodeo takes place Aug. 1-2 and Hanson says some competitors will make the short trip.
There are several local competitors, including Steve Maupin of Ione in the ranch bronc riding.
Maupin won second in the event at last year’s Rough Stock Rodeo.
There are seven ranch bronc riders entered, with entries still open.
Barrel racing drew the most competitors, with 30-barrel racers entered.
Bull riding currently has 13 entries, with last year’s winner Ryson Sweeney of Deer Park returning. Conner Dean and Dustin Dean of Elk are also entered.
Saddle bronc riding drew 10 competitors, including Tate Owens of Colbert.
Bareback riding only got three entries, although Hanson is hopeful to encourage more riders. He is currently at the State Line Idaho Rodeo.
Premium bucking chutes seating (First Six Rows Section B, and first six rows on A & C seats 1-10) is $30 per ticket. Beer Garden and reserved seating for adults (ages 12 and up) is $25. Children ages 4 – 11 is $12.
