Jude, 2, is the newest finisher in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program by the Pend Oreille County Library District. Registered as 1 day old, he is the sixth finisher from Ione and the 18th finisher in the county. Children whose caregivers read them five books per day enter kindergarten having heard 1.4 million more words than children who are never read to. This means they will develop literacy skills more quickly and easily, setting them up for a lifetime of success. People who want to register their children in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program can stop by any of Pend Oreille County libraries to sign up. Prizes for the reader and child are given for every 100 books read.
