Third youth arrested in vandalism

NEWPORT – A third juvenile made his first court appearance Friday, July 25 after being arrested for his alleged involvement in vandalism that damaged vehicles and homes in Newport on July 6. The 17-year-old pled not guilty to first degree malicious mischief during his July 25 appearance before Pend Oreille County District Court Judge Robin McCroskey. He was the third suspect arrested in the case.

Two others had already been arrested and were held in Martin Hall Juvenile Facility until they were released into the custody of their parents, awaiting trial. A fourth is still at-large and a warrant has been issued for his arrest, according to Newport Police Chief Wade Nelson. Security cameras caught footage of four male youths throwing rocks through car windows and damaging outbuildings in Newport early morning July 6. Rocks were also thrown through the windows of houses. Estimated total damages were at $21,400.

The 17-year-old was still in custody in Martin Hall as of publication Tuesday, July 29.
