PRIEST RIVER — The Pend Oreille Rowing and Paddling Association, in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is holding the PORPA Sprints on the Priest River — a day of non-motorized fun races and community celebration happening from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Priest River Recreation Area (also known as the Mudhole). The event invites paddlers of all ages and skill levels to join in friendly races across Priest River. Whether rowing, paddling, pedaling a kayak, canoeing, paddleboarding, water biking or other human-powered craft, this event is for all.
The highlight is a thrilling multi-craft relay race, where teams compete using at least three different types of watercrafts. Other sprint races will range from 500 to 1,000 meters in length — short, spirited competitions for all experience levels.
Human powered craft types include kayaks (recreational and racing); kid’s kayak (two available to loan at the event); stand-up paddleboard; canoe; raft; sculling; sweep rowing, etc.
Categories are youth 1 (10 and under); youth 2 (11 - 14); youth 3 (17 and under); novice (less than 1 year experience); and experienced (adult experienced rowers are limited to two rowing races).
The Multi-Craft Relay Races are a highlight event, where four racers per team (at least one youth), with at least three different human powered craft, each race a 250-meter leg carrying the team “baton.’ Teams are organized at the time of the event.
Children race for free. Thanks to the support of sponsors and donors, youth racers ages 17 and under can participate at no cost and receive a free event t-shirt. Donations help fund free participation and provides swim lessons to local children, ensuring safe and fun access to water recreation for all.
