NEWPORT — Seed saving is a time-tested gardening practice that lets you harvest and preserve seeds from some of your healthiest, most productive plants so you can get a head start for the following season. Want to learn how? The Newport Community Garden Committee is hosting a brief talk by Master Gardener Kamori Cattadoris.
“Saving your own garden seeds can save you money and reward you with developing your own land race, a variety adapted to your unique environment,” Cattadoris said. “Learn the basics of growing, harvesting and storing seeds. Each crop has different requirements, and some are easier to get positive results than others.”
The talk will take place Tuesday, Aug.19, at 1 p.m. at the Newport Library, located at 116 S. Washington Ave. The event will be held indoors, but attendees are also invited to visit the Newport Community Garden located just behind the library.
The Newport Community Garden is a collaborative effort with committee members from the Pend Oreille Conservation District, the Newport Library (Pend Orielle County Library District), Friends of the POC Library District, WSU Extension and the Master Gardeners/SNAPEd program. For this year’s supplies and programming, the committee is relying on funding from community donations, as well a second grant from the National Association of Conservation Districts’ Urban Agriculture Conservation program.
