Buddhist nuns teaching Compassion Every Day

Buddhist nuns teaching Compassion Every Day

NEWPORT — Buddhist nuns from Sravasti Abbey will give a series of classes entitled Compassion Every Day, offering practical ways to develop peace of mind through daily acts of kindness.

Thubten Chonyi and Thubten Dekyi are teaching the class, which meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. from Tuesday, Sept. 9 to Tuesday, Oct. 14 in the Newport Conference Room of the Public Utility District Administration Building, 130 N. Washington Ave. There is no charge or advance registration, and offerings are welcome.

The class is based on the book “An Open-Hearted Life: Transformative Methods for Compassionate Living from a Clinical Psychologist and a Buddhist Nun.” It is co-written by Buddhist teacher and author Venerable Thubten Chodron and Eastern Washington University professor and clinical psychologist Russell Kolts.

Both Chonyi and Dekyi have studied Buddhist psychology and meditation for many years and taught in Spokane and other cities. The class includes guided meditation and group discussion to help people of all backgrounds bring greater kindness into their daily experience.

The class is open to all, and no meditation background is needed. For more information, visit sravastiabbey. org/events/.
