Purple flags at Counseling Services in Newport mark the number of opioid overdose deaths since 2017 in Pend Oreille County, a little over four a year. Northeast Tri County Health is marking International Overdose Awareness Day, Aug. 31, with a Facebook series designed to increase understanding of addiction and recovery, challenge stigma and offer resources for those affected. Alongside the flags, there are signs with QR codes that link to local resources, including where to access free Narcan, a medication that can reverse opioid overdose.
