NEWPORT — A huckleberry picker who was reported missing Aug. 16 has been found.
Harry Lashbrook, 62, was located Aug. 18. He had walked to a house on Kalispell Trail Road, over 5 miles from his last seen remote location in the Boyer Mountain area where he was picking huckleberries with family.
Lashbrook told Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office deputies that he had lost direction and walked until he found the house. During his second day in the woods, he saw a helicopter three mountain ridges over from his location that appeared to be searching. Until then, he had survived on the huckleberries he had picked.
Other than tired and hungry from his two nights in the backcountry, Lashbrook appeared to be in good condition, according to a Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office news release. He was ready to be home with family.
Pend Oreille County Search and Rescue, Stevens County Search and Rescue, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Air Division and Washington State Fish and Wildlife all participated in the three-day search for Lashbrook.
The Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office reminds all who venture into the backcountry to be prepared for the possibility of being in the woods longer than planned, and to carry proper clothing and basic survival supplies.
