BRIEFLY

CUSICK – A wildfire near Tacoma Creek was at zero percent containment and 197 acres as of newspaper deadline Tuesday, Sept. 2. Northeast Washington Incident Management Team 2 is managing the fire with operations set up at Kalispel Tribe Pow Wow grounds. There are three hand crews, and seven engines assigned to this incident and more resources were expected to arrive Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 3.

The fire was moving north-northwest from the Tacoma Creek Road. Crews are actively engaged with improving and fortifying the anchor (strengthening a secure starting point for building a fire line), as well as working up the flanks (sides) of the fire. Fire personnel are scouting for other opportunities to safely engage with suppression efforts. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Officials ask the public to use caution while travelling in and out of the Tacoma Creek area.

WaCanId riding through Pend Oreille

COLVILLE — WaCanId, a six-day cycling event that loops through the Selkirk Mountains of Washington, Canada and Idaho, is this month.

The annual Rotary Club-supported event is now in its 17th year and includes 280 miles of scenery and communities. Members of these communities are encouraged to watch for the group of bikers as they traverse the International Selkirk Loop and a couple of “Super Side Trips” from Monday, Sept. 8 to Saturday, Sept. 13. The final Super Side Trip is Sept. 13 from Sandpoint to Colville.

WaCanId is a partnership between the Loop and Rotary Clubs of District 5080 along the route. The Kaniksu Sunrise Rotary Club (Newport/ Priest River) has been a longtime supporter of the event.

Create hosting ‘World of Waste’ talk

NEWPORT — An artist and executive director of Zero Waste Spokane is giving a presentation at Create Arts Center this month.

Elyse Hochstadt aims to raise public awareness on overconsumption and waste in the textile industry with her presentation, “From Passion to Action: Making Change Happen in a World of Waste.” The event is 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21 at Create, at 900 W. Fourth St. in Newport.

“Consumption is at the heart of our environmental issues,” Hochstadt said in a Create news release. “We are trained daily to buy more and feel rewarded when we find bargains, but there is a dangerous disconnect between the items and their true cost to people and planet and this is by design.”

Hochstadt’s presentation is free to attend, though donations are welcome. Doors open at 12:30 p.m., and snacks and drinks will be served. For more information, contact 509-447-7958.
