Lady Spartans learning the ropes

PRIEST RIVER — The Lady Spartans went up against the Grangeville Bulldogs losing 10-1 at Priest River Saturday, Sept. 6. The young team continued their learning curve, resulting in junior Kalleelah Davis scoring Priest River’s first goal of the season. Davis also had nine saves in the 20 minutes she was the goalkeeper.

“The Lady Spartans fought hard and are improving every day,” head coach Danielle Carey said after the game.

Freshman Jasmine Zylstra had 24 saves in the 60 minutes she was keeper and one shot on goal as a forward. Freshman Rachel Roberts had two shots on goal, and junior Lilly Kennedy had sophomore Macie Olmo both had one shot on goal.

Earlier last week Priest River hosted St.

Maries on Tuesday, Sept. 2, losing to the Lumberjacks 5-0. There was a notable difference in the players’ efforts as opposed to their first game of the season last month.

“They were definitely more aggressive,” Carey said after the Spartans’ second game of the season. “Since our last game we have focused on how important pressuring the ball is, and the girls have done really well with it.”

Freshman Jasmine Zylstra had six saves in the first half of the game and sophomore Aleigha Razo had four saves in the second half. Junior Vivian Savage had two shots on goal, as did freshman Rachel Roberts. Junior Lilly Kennedy had one shot on goal.

Priest River hosted Bonners Ferry Monday, Sept. 8 after deadline. The Spartans face off against Riverside at Priest River Lamanna High Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. They will play against the Rams on their own turf in Riverside Monday, Sept. 15, also at 4 p.m.
