CHATTAROY — The Newport Grizzly football team trailed the Riverside Rams 14-7 after giving up a first quarter, 7-yard rushing touchdown and a 37-yard second quarter pass play score Friday, Sept. 5 at Riverside. But Newport overcame that deficit by holding Riverside scoreless in the second half, while piling up points themselves, leaving with a 35-14 nonleague win.
Kutter Driver played a big role for Newport in the win, rushing for more than 202 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries. He and Jacob Reimers accounted for most of the Grizzlies’ 335 yards of offense. Reimers also broke 100 yards rushing, with 105 yards on 10 carries, including one TD.
Driver capped a second quarter drive with a 7-yard Newport touchdown run for the Grizzlies’ first score.
He scored twice more after the halftime break, scoring on 3-yard and 1-yard runs.
Reimers broke a 16-yard run for a score in the fourth quarter. Driver added a final 18-yard score. Bradly Martin III played quarterback, completing two of five passes for 10 yards. He also rushed for 7 yards on four carries. Gavin Hunt-Estrada had two carries for 8 yards and Preston Wacenske gained 3 yards on three carries for Newport.
Friday, Sept. 12, the Grizzlies make another short trip, to Priest River (2-1), where they take on the Spartans in the Spartans’ homecoming game that starts at 7 p.m.
Priest River volleyball has first loss
PRIEST RIVER — The Priest River volleyball team came away from last week’s play with two wins and one loss.
Tuesday, Sept. 2, the Spartans hosted St.
Maries, winning in three sets 25-12, 25-20 and 2518. Jayda Storro had 23 assists for Priest River. On offense, McKinley Burgess- Duquette led with 11 kills and three ace serves.
Hadley Sandau had three blocks and Callie Stanger had 10 digs.
Thursday, Sept. 2 the Spartans hosted Kellogg, losing in three sets 26-28, 19-25 and 22-25. Ward noted three top hitters: Raygn Turner with 10 kills and both Burgess-Duquette and Kenadie Kingery had six. Stanger had 13 digs and Turner 10. Storro and Burgess-Duquette continued to lead with 22 assists and four ace serves. Aleigha Jensen had four blocks.
Saturday, Sept. 6, the Spartans visited Timberlake. They left with a fiveset win. After losing the first set 25-19, the Spartans won the next two 25-16 and 27-25. They almost won the fourth after a comeback from an 8-point deficit but lost 28-26. They won the fifth set 15-12.
Turner led with 17 kills.
Toni Marinello and Turner had 15 digs each, leading defense alongside Sandau, Jensen, Storro and Kingery with one block each. Storro led with 28 assists and four ace serves.
Priest River hosts Newport at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, then Grangeville at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13. Next week, the Spartans are visiting Riverside Monday, Sept. 15 for a 7 p.m. game.
