They say that life imitates art.
It seems that the actions of this administration are becoming perilously close to the movie Idiocracy. Are we entering a new Dark Age?

Thanks for helping
I just wanted to share an experience we recently had in the community. Friday 8/29 my wife and I were visiting the Buddhist Abby for an event they were holding. On our way back we got a flat tire at the triangle section E. Chattaroy and Nelson. We had the spare but no tools to change it. So began the wait for AAA.
In this time no less than 5 cars stopped to check and see if we were alright. Now mind you this was at night when I’m sure people just wanted to get home.
As we waited one couple stopped and offered to help change the tire. They just had to run home a little bit away and get a jack. They got back but unfortunately where we parked didn’t leave enough room to get the jack under. But they waited with us, chatted us up, and shared some their story until AAA arrived.
They definitely didn’t have to do that but they did out of kindness.
Their names have escaped us unfortunately.
My wife and I just want to say thank you! To that wonderful couple and the community as a whole.

Why not America first
Week after week we read the complaining and accusations of people with minority points of view criticizing the way America is being governed. They complain that Trump doesn’t deserve the peace prize. That Obama did things better than Trump. That Republicans are being political by calling out the Democrat administrations for encouraging illegal border crossings, allowing illegals to register to vote, and issuing not only driver licenses, but Commercial Driving Licenses, which was done in CA. and WA, to an illegal who didn’t speak English and could not read the road signs, resulting in the death of 3 people in FL., when he made an illegal U turn on an Interstate highway.
A regular contributing writer to this paper blames the accident on the people in the car saying they should have stopped. His mindset is programed that the tragedy could have been caused by a legal citizen and that murders and rapes by illegals could have been done by legal citizens.
My answer was, but they were not caused by legal citizens and would never have happened if the illegal aliens were not allowed in our sovereign nation to begin with.

We deserve better than
Republican
I can honestly say I have never seen a more demented person in my life than the current president of the United States. This guy is not in his right mind at all. His best buddy is the second most hated person in the world. That’s Vladimir Putin. We know who the first most hated person is and that’s Donald Trump. He proudly displays a picture of Putin and him together like it’s something to really be proud of?
All I can say from all the insanity and craziness is brought to our country is, what is wrong with the Republican party that they continue to stand by and do nothing? We as Americans deserve so much better.

No town hall from Baumgartner
I was struck by Mr. Baumgartner’s latest submission to The Miner in which he touts the joys of watching children play sports.
I thought that editorial was as pertinent to the role of a US Representative as saying one enjoys a slice of fresh baked bread.
Baumgartner was not able to muster the courage to hold a town hall during the August long recess, but he did have the energy to hold an extravagant fund raiser in Spokane. To me that says that those of us in the rest of his district are not as important as the wealthy donors in the district’s largest city. It also says he knows he would get tough questions that he’d rather not answer.
The United States is facing a crisis and a major player in that crises is the Congress. Congress has relinquished its constitutionally mandated power of the purse and bestowed it on the president.
Baumgartner and his Republican comrades have bowed low to every illegal executive action, from trashing Medicaid to deporting US citizens via ICE raids, to disrespecting our allies with tariffs that only hike our own prices.
If the choice is constitutional government or presidential monarchy, we know Baumgartner favors the latter.

It’s getting worse
It’s another bad jobs report today. The US economy only added 22,000 jobs in August when economists expected it to be 75,000; unemployment rose to 4.3%. Even worse, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reduced the number of jobs for June to a minus 13,000 – that’s a net loss of jobs which is the first time that’s happened since December 2020.
My guess is that Trump is going to fire the entire BLS. The BLS is acting like the little boy who pointed out that the emperor has no clothes.
If you believe, as I do, that our country is rapidly going downhill then get out and demonstrate.
There are lots of opportunities to show your displeasure. To my MAGA friends, tune your dials away from the right-wing propaganda stations you seem to love and get your information from a broad spectrum of sources – right, center, left.

Update on immigrant driver
An update on the illegal alien truck driver accident that killed three people finds that the three people in the minivan were Haitian immigrants. Their Temporary Protected Status was revoked by Trump on July 1.
So, no US citizens were harmed or killed by the illegal alien truck driver. Like ‘no animals were harmed in making this movie’ kind of a thing. MAGA will need to put away their crying towels as Fox News dishing 24/7 about this accident killing Americans was wasted.
Next time Billy Bob (a white country western truck driver) exits a bar and drives his 18-wheeler into a family of four, I want to see the MAGA outrage machine crank up. That isn’t going to happen because their focus is illegal immigrant caused accidents and wrongdoings. The Florida accident wouldn’t have broadcast on Fox if it was caused by a white citizen truck driver.
My point about why the minivan didn’t stop and hit the trailer would have been turned into the fault of the immigrant driver’s failure and poor Billy Bob whose truck was wrecked by an illegal alien driver. I wonder what a certain letter writer thinks about the media outrage reporting this accident.

Expressing cultural bias object of letter
In response to the Sept. 3 letter titled “Everything in our lives made political,” one reason I feel the media did not inquire about the minivan stopping is common sense. Examples include reaction distance and braking distance to the vehicle’s speed on the turnpike. The Florida Turnpike has a maximum speed limit of 70 miles per hour. That speed requires over 380 feet to stop.
What was the following distance of the minivan along with various other variables.
Secondly, the in-cab video shows that the truck driver was still making the alleged illegal U-turn when the minivan collided with the truck. The semi-truck was in the outside lane, while the minivan was in the inside lane. The truck driver crossed multiple lanes of traffic to make the apparent illegal U-turn. To date, all investigations have concluded that the minivan was unable to avoid the collision. The writer seems to deflect the significance of the alleged illegal maneuver by the truck driver as the critical factor in the crash. I believe the letter’s primary objective is to express the writer’s continual cultural bias by using a red herring fallacy.
Abortion, really?
