Grizzly cross-country off to a good start

BONNERS FERRY – Newport cross-country did well at the Bonners Ferry Invite Saturday, Sept. 13, with the girls’ team earning second place with 40 points. Senior Aimee Busby won first place in the girls’ 5,000-meter varsity at 21:14, with teammate Olivia Collins, a sophomore, won second at 21:29. Sophomore Sophia Peaker was ninth place at 25:41. Senior Donavan Mason finished 14th with a time of 23:09 in the boys’ 5,000-meter varsity, followed by classmate William Rheinford in 15th place at 23:409. Sophomore Aiden Tieman cracked the top 20 with a time of 25:10.

The Grizzlies traveled to Northwest Christian for the NWC Josh Wright Memorial Jamboree Monday, Sept. 8. Mason finished 21st at 17:10 in the 2-mile varsity race. Classmate William Rheinford finished 29th with a time of 18:31. Sophomore Aiden Tieman had a time of 18:32, earning him 31st place. Freshman Elijah Sattleen was 42nd place at 23:45. Junior Logan Rheinford came in 46th with a time of 30:33. Busby won second in the 2-mile varsity race, clocking in at 15:38. Collins followed in third place at 15:51. Senior Savannah Garris finished 10th at 21:38, junior Kasey St. Andre was 11th at 22:49 and junior Aurelia Johnson finished 13th at 24:30.

Newport started off the season at the Timberlake Farragut Invitational Saturday, Sept. 6 at Farragut State Park in Idaho, with Tieman placing 22nd with a time of 25:28 in the boys’ and girls’ 5,000-meter, 25-minute race. Freshman Leif Axel finished 43rd at 29:20. Busby came in 41st in the girls’ 5,000-meter varsity race with a time of 21:36. Collins was 45th at 21:47. In the 5,000-meter, 25-minute boys’ and girls’ Garris was 32nd at 29:35. Johnson was 50th at 32:04.

William Rheinford finished at 163rd place with a time of 23:34 in the 5,000-meter boys’ varsity race. Mason was 167th at 24:15.

The Grizzlies will compete at the CAN-AM Invitational in Kettle Falls Saturday, Sept. 20. Varsity races start at 11:40 a.m.
