PRIEST RIVER — The Newport volleyball team couldn’t get it together by the end of the third set in their Thursday, Sept. 11 game against Priest River, where they lost by 25-15, 25-23 and 25-10.

“We were just having a hard time coming together as a team,” Newport coach Kathy Eggleston says.

Meanwhile, the Spartans “came out hot” against the rival Grizzlies in the first set, Priest River coach Katlyn Ward says. They also won the second set, despite giving up many unforced errors. By the third set, Priest River was having fun in the Priest River homecoming contest.

“They absolutely played their hearts out,” Ward says.

Newport stayed with Priest River for most of the first set, competing point-for-point until the end, Eggleston says. But the Grizzlies could not get the momentum on their side in the second or third sets, having some bad reads on serves and receives.

“So, we learned some stuff,” Eggleston says.

Newport’s Kaylia Earl did good, Eggleston says. Grace Keck also played a good defense game.

For Priest River, Raygn Turner led in kills with seven, digs with seven and ace serves with three. Jayden Storro and McKinley Burgess-Duquette were close behind Turner, Storro with six kills and ace serves and Burgess-Duquette with four kills and one ace serve. Toni Marinello had six digs, and Callie Stanger had one ace serve. Aleigha Jenson led blocks with two.
