CUSICK — When the Cusick High School volleyball team arrived at Springdale ready for their first game of the season, what they saw was their opponent playing against another team.
“We showed up and they were playing Odessa,” Cusick coach Shelby Vickrey says. “And somehow we were not on their schedule.”
That was Thursday, Sept. 11. Because of the scheduling conflict, the start of Cusick’s season was delayed to Tuesday, Sept. 16, the night they hosted Wellpinit. The team will also have to pick up another game to keep their schedule this season full, though as of Tuesday, Sept. 16 Vickrey does not know how that will play out.
After Wellpinit, Cusick goes to Valley Christian for their next game at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18. Saturday, Sept. 20 Cusick hosts two games, the first at noon against Republic and the second at 4 p.m. against Curlew. Cusick will finally play Springdale at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23 at home.
Newport volleyball wins twice, loses once
NEWPORT — The Newport High School volleyball team started their season with two wins and a loss.
Thursday, Sept. 4 Newport went to Riverside for their first game, winning in three sets. The following week, Newport hosted Reardan Tuesday, Sept. 9 and won in five sets 3-2.
The Grizzlies all did really well in Reardan, Newport coach Kathy Eggleston says. Lindsay-Rose Collison played an especially good game, and Kenna Arthur stepped up after Samantha Tellessen sustained an injury.
“They really came together in the last three games after dropping the first two,” Eggleston says.
Then came the Grizzlies’ first loss of the season, an away game against Priest River where the rival Spartans won in three sets by 25-15, 25-23 and 25-10. (See separate story.)
Their next game is against Jenkins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16 at home, after The Miner’s weekly deadline. Thursday, Sept. 18 Newport goes to Davenport at 6:30 p.m., before going to Riverside for a rematch at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20. The following week, Newport hosts Northwest Christian at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23.
Selkirk volleyball starts with win
METALINE FALLS — The Selkirk High School volleyball team started their season off with a win.
The Rangers hosted Chewelah Saturday, Sept. 13 and won in five sets. They lost the first two sets 25-27 and 23-25, but were able to work together, turn on the pressure and win the last three sets by 25-15, 25-16 and 15-12, Selkirk coach Kristal D’Uva says.
Courtney Hastings had two blocks, and Kinley Petrich and Lily Smith had one ace serve each.
“The girls all worked really well together to pull off the defeat,” D’Uva says. “Chewelah was a competitive opponent and it was a great game overall.”
They go to Valley Christian for their next game at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18. Saturday, Sept. 20 Selkirk hosts Curlew at noon, followed by Republic at 4 p.m.
