NEWPORT – A 28-year-old woman is in custody, charged with first degree assault domestic violence following a shooting Friday, Sept. 12 near the intersection of Spring Valley Road and Stohr Road, south of Newport.
Tyran R. Graham appeared in Pend Oreille County District Court Monday, Sept. 15, where she had a first appearance on the charge, accused of shooting a 40-year-old woman.
After reading a statement of probable cause that said the victim was shot twice, once on the right side and another time in the chest, prosecuting attorney Dolly Hunt asked for a $250,000 bail. Citing a statement from one of the investigating officers that he was told the two women were in a romantic relationship, Hunt asked for a domestic violence designation.
Defense attorney Brett Billingsley reserved argument on the bail. He said that Graham denied being in a romantic relationship with the victim.
He said the statement wasn’t enough proof for the domestic violence designation.
Billingsley said Graham had staples in the back of her head and numerous bruises from an altercation with the victim. He said she didn’t feel safe in jail and that her property had been burgled several times and padlocks cut.
District Court Judge Robin McCroskey found probable cause for the charge, including the domestic violence designa- tion. She set bail at $100,000.
According to a news release from the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office, Friday, Sept. 12, about 5:50 p.m., deputies responded to the report of a gunshot victim south of Newport.
“Neighbors reported hearing two females fighting, followed by two gunshots,” according to the news release. Deputies arrived and located the 40-yearold woman lying on the ground. The woman was transported via helicopter to an area trauma center, where she was treated and later released. Graham was arrested for first degree assault and transported the Pend Oreille County Jail in Newport.
First degree assault is punishable by a maximum of life in prison and $50,000 fine.
