Spartans fall to Bulldogs

KETTLE FALLS – The Priest River Spartans fell 18-16 to the Kettle Falls Bulldogs in a non-league contest played at Kettle Falls Friday, Sept. 19.

Braden Leach caught two touchdowns from Priest River quarterback Lucas Matthews and Nate Fergert rushed for the Spartan’s other TD. He also carried in a pair of point after runs for another 4 points.

Matthews ended up completing 11 of 27 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted once.

Leach had three receptions for 71 yards and two touchdowns, including one for 58 yards. Layton Goins had five catches for 61 yards. Madden Redinger caught two passes for 47 yards.

Fergert rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. His longest run was for 15 yards and he lost one fumble. Goins carried nine times and gained 48 yards. Matthews rushed three times for 17 yards.

The Spartans played without Colton Kuprienko, out with an ankle injury.

On defense, Redinger led the way with 11 solo tackles, including one tackle for a loss. He was in on another four assists.

Next week Priest River has a much needed bye before heading on the road for games with Colfax on Oct. 3 and Orofino Oct. 10. The Spartans return home for a game with St. Maries Oct. 17.
