Grizzly runners go hard at CAN-AM

KETTLE FALLS – Newport cross-county were one of 16 high school teams that competed at the CAN-AM Invitational at Kettle Falls Saturday, Sept. 20.

“Everyone on the girls’ and boys’ team had a season best,” coach Morgan Johnson said. “They have been very focused and working extremely hard.”

The Lady Grizzly girls came in fourth overall in the girls’ varsity 5000-meter race with a score of 131 out of nine teams that placed. Senior Aimee Busby continues to lead the way for Newport girls winning second place with a time of 20:56. Sophomore Olivia Collins was eighth at 21:24. Classmate Sophia Peaker placed 35th with a time of 24:46. Savannah Garris, a senior, came in 52nd at 26:28 with a three-minute improvement on her previous time. Junior Kasey St. Andre was in 61st place with a time of 27:28. Classmate Aurelia Johnson had a time of 29:14, earning 67th place.

Senior Donovan Mason finished in 65th the boys’ 5,000-meter varsity race, clocking in at 22:25. Classmate William Rheinford followed at 72nd place at 22:59 and sophomore Aiden Tieman was 77th with a time of 24:20. Freshmen Elijah Sattleen and Leif Axel came in 79th and 80th with times of 25:03 and 29:54, respectively. The boys’ team placed 12th overall with 335 points.

Newport heads to St. George’s for the District 6 2B League Meet Wednesday, Sept. 24. After that, it’s off to the Lake Spokane XC Invite at Lakeside High School Saturday, Sept. 27.
