Grizzly girls’ soccer wins border battle with Priest River

NEWPORT – The Lady Grizzlies’ soccer team won over Priest River 7-1, Tuesday, Sept. 16 and tied against Riverside, 2-2, Saturday, Sept. 20. The home game against Priest River saw Newport gain its first win of the season.

“It’s always exciting to get a win over Priest River,” Newport coach Laura Verity said. “Being a cross-border rival that win means a little more to both schools. I was also happy with the tie against Riverside. Our girls fought hard and came back from behind to tie up the game. Our defense was under pressure much of the game and did a great job holding them to only two goals.”

Emmalee Doughty got Newport’s first goal in the third minute of the first half with an assist by Emelia Wacenske. In the sixth minute Delaney Brandtner scored with an assist by Maria MacArthur; Amy Ives in the 20th, assisted by Marisa Dahl; Joelle Brandtner in the 21st, assisted by Hailey Davison; Delany Brandtner in the 38th (no assist); Dahl in the 55th; and Amy Ives in the 75th minute.

Priest River’s Macie Olmo got the Lady Spartans only goal in the game’s 70th minute.

Newport’s Emma Verity had four saves and Doughty had six. Priest River’s Aleigha Razo had eight saves. Newport had 26 shots on goal and Priest River had 11.

The Grizzlies ended their game at Riverside neck and neck against the Rams, tying 2-2 last Thursday, Sept. 18. Riverside scored first in the fourth minute, followed by Newport’s Joelle Brandtner, assisted by Lily Verity in the 20th minute. Riverside responded with another goal at the 51st minute, then Amy Ives came in with an unassisted goal in the 69th minute to tie the game. Newport had eight shots on goal and Riverside had 14. Emma Verity had 12 saves and Riverside two.

Newport hosted Chesterton Academy of Notre Dame Tuesday, Sept. 23 after deadline. The Grizzlies travel to Davenport for a game Thursday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m.
