Lady Spartans soccer gets challenging
NEWPORT – The Lady Spartans’ soccer team went up against border rival Newport in an away game, losing 7-1 Tuesday, Sept. 16. Macie Olmo scored Priest River’s point. Delaney Brandtner and Amey Ives scored twice, and the Grizzlies (1-1) beat the visiting Spartans (0-7) in the nonleague game. Priest River had 11 shots on goal and eight saves.
Olmo also scored a goal for Priest River in their away game against the Riverside Rams Monday, Sept. 15. The Spartans also lost that game 7-1.
Coming this week Priest River heads to St. Maries Wednesday, Sept. 24 and then to Sandpoint Friday, Sept. 26. Both games will start at 4 p.m.
Spartan volleyball continues to win
PRIEST RIVER – The Priest River Spartan volleyball team racked up another league win Saturday at home, beating Orofino in four sets.
“Came into the first set asleep,” Spartan coach Kaitlyn Ward says of losing the first set 25-15. “We needed a wake-up call.”
Priest River came back taking the second set 25-21, the third set 25-21 and the fourth 25-187.
She said Raygn Turner and McKinley Durgess-Duquette had a great game.
“McKinley always bring the energy and fun,” Ward says. “We need it.”
Turner had nine kills to kills to go with four aces and nine digs in the game. Haylee Jepson- Church had three aces and Durgess-Duquette had nine kills. Jayda Storro had 24 assists and seven kills.
Toni Marinello had eight digs for the Spartans, Callie Stanger had seven and Jepson-Church and Burgess-Duquette had six each.
Priest River (9-1) hosted Bonners Ferry Tuesday. They travel to St. Maires Thursday, Sept. 25 for a 7 p.m. match and to Newport Monday, Sept. 29 for another 7 p.m. match.
Panthers proceed to victory
KETTLE FALLS – The Cusick Panthers turned out for the CANAM Invitational in Kettle Falls Saturday, Sept. 20, with junior Richard Sandwick placing fifth in the boys’ 5,000-meter varsity race, clocking in at 17:45. Nick Sandwick, a freshman, came in 41st with a time of 19:45.
Cusick heads to the District 6 2B League Meet at St. George Wednesday, Sept. 24.
Spartan girls’ team places nineth at CAN-AM
KETTLE FALLS - The Lady Spartans’ team came in ninth overall with a score of 161 in the girls’ 5,000-meter race at last Saturday’s CAM-AM Invitational in Kettle Falls on Sept. 20. Freshman Capri White finished 22nd with a time of 23:13. Kyla White, a senior, was 33rd at 24:10. Junior Alannah McLaimtaig was 38th at 25:10. Freshman Abagail Shaulis was in 45th at 25:54. Maiyu Smith, a freshman, was 54th at 26:31. Junior Breelyn Duran clocked in at 27:18, finishing in 59th. Junior Sakura Smith was 68th with a time of 29:22.
Junior Daniel Gunkle placed 23rd in the boys’ 5,000-meter varsity race with a time of 19:02, with freshman Tadhg McLaimtaig in 26th at 19:07. Sophomore Maxwell Hewitt had a time of 21:47, earning him 60th place. Jonathan White, a junior, finished in 75th at 23:53.
There were 16 high schools that competed overall.
Priest River travels to Lakeside High School for the Lake Spokane XC Invite Saturday, Sept. 27.
