HUNTERS – The SelPort Lumberjacks scored first against Columbia-Hunters Friday, Sept. 19, but came up short, losing 48-30.

SelPort coach Kelly Cain says it was a tough loss.

“We have been pretty competitive in our last two games, but have not finished strong enough to come away with the win,” Cain says.

SelPort’s Blaine Reickers had a good game, breaking big runs and gaining more than 200 yards in the process. The Northport runner score first for the Lumberjacks on a 45-yard run. He converted the extra-point run to put SelPort up 8-0.

The Lions answered with a long run of their own, scoring on a 55-yarder. Columbia- Hunters scored again on a pass play, then on another 45-yard run.

The Lumberjack’s Jaxson Chantry then made a 7-yard touchdown run to bring the Lumberjacks to within a touchdown in the second quarter but the Lions broke a 25-yard touchdown run to head into halftime up 26-14.

Reickers came out in the second half with an 80-yard touchdown run.

With Chantry’s extra points run, the Lumberjacks trailed 26-22.

The Lions answered with two third quarter touchdowns, one on a 40-yard pass play and another on an 18yard run to extend their lead.

SelPort kept pushing, with Slate Parker scoring on a 10-yard run, with a Chantry to Mac Glasgow pass play for the extra points to make it a 40-30 game.

Columbia-Hunters put the game away with another short touchdown run, this time converting their 2-point extra point run to make it a 48-30 final.

Cain is happy with the Lumberjack’s run game.

“Our run game has been pretty solid with Johnny Oberholtzer, Judah Creach, and Tristan VanArsdall doing the bulk of the work on the interior line,” he says. “We need to do a better job of finishing strong.” Reickers had 213 yards on 24 carries, scoring the two touchdowns. Chantrey had 26 yards on eight carries and one TD and Parker had nine yards on two carries, one of which was for a TD.

On defense, Chantry had seven total tackles, including four solo tackles. Oberholtzer had seven total tackles, including a sack and a tackle for a loss. Creach had eight total tackles. He and VanArsdal combined for a tackle for a loss and he had two solo tackles for a loss.

Next up for the Lumberjacks is a game with Curlew Friday, Sept. 26 at Northport. That game starts at 7 p.m.
