Cider, Pie and Bears, Oh My!

NEWPORT – The Pend Oreille County Library District, in partnership with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, will be hosting “Cider and Pie and Bears, Oh My!”, at the Usk Community Hall on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as a part of WDFW’s ongoing bear abatement efforts.

Community members are invited to bring apples from their yards or public trees to press them into cider. The Calispel Valley Library has an apple picker that can be checked out before the event to get hard-to-reach apples. Participants should bring their own containers to take home fresh cider. In addition to cider pressing, there will be an apple-based food contest. Participants are invited to bring their best apple recipes, from pies to cobblers to salads, to enter a taste contest and vote for the winner.
