Not enough players for Cusick football game

CUSICK – Cusick had to call off a football game with Almira-Coulee/Hartline last Friday, Sept. 26 because they didn’t have enough players healthy enough or eligible to play.

“We had to cancel the game,” Cusick coach Dustin Person says. “We should have enough to play Springdale on Friday. We should be getting Myland Whitford, Aiden Schubert, and Steven Mathis back this week.”

The Panthers will be at home for the game with Springdale’s Mary Walker High School, Friday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m.

Spartan harriers, away!

NINE MILE FALLS – The Spartans ran cross-country at the Lake Spokane Invite Saturday, Sept. 27 at Lakeside High School. In the boys’ 5,000-meter varsity race freshman Tadhg McLaimtaig came in 31st place with a time of 18:34. Junior Daniel Gunkle placed 42nd at 18:59. Sophomore Maxwell Hewitt clocked in at 21:29, earning him 73rd place.

Senior Capri White placed 33rd with a time of 23:32, followed by senior Kyla White in 39th at 24:03. Junior Alannah McLaimtaig came in 62nd place at 25:50. Maiyu Smith, a freshman, was 79th with a time of 27:06. Junior Breelyn Duran clocked in at 28:33, earning her 91st. The official team score for the girls was 256, earning them 11th place out of 12.

Next up is the Ben Castro Invite at Pinehurst Golf Course Thursday, Oct. 2. After that it’s the eighth Annual Battle for the 509 at the Spokane Polo Grounds Saturday, Oct. 4.

Priest River girls’ soccer hits the road

PRIEST RIVER – The Lady Spartan soccer team was busy last week with away games against Bonners Ferry, St. Maries and Sandpoint. Results were not available before newspaper deadline this week and will appear in next week’s edition. Coming up, Priest River travels to Timberlake Tuesday, Oct. 7 and will host Timberlake Thursday, Oct. 9. Both games start at 4 p.m.

Cusick volleyball playing more this week

CUSICK — The Cusick High School volleyball team’s season continues this and next week.

Cusick visited Columbia Tuesday, Sept. 30, after The Miner’s weekly deadline. Later this week the Panthers host the Selkirk Rangers at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, then visit Wellpinit at noon Saturday, Oct. 4. Next week Cusick has another away game at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7 against Inchelium.

Sandwick wins third

SPOKANE – Cusick Panthers cracked the top three at the District 6 2B League Cross-Country Meet Wednesday, Sept. 24 at St. George’s. Junior Richard Sandwick won third place in the boys’ 5,000-meter varsity race, clocking in at 17:47. Freshman Nick Sandwick placed 23rd at 20:14, followed by classmate James Lilya at 45th at 22:43. Freshman Anthony Seale came in 76th at 29:12.

Cusick competed at the NE2B League Meet No. 2 North after newspaper deadline. Coming up, the team travels to the eigth Annual Battle for the 509 at the Spokane Polo Grounds.

Priest River volleyball winning streak continues

PRIEST RIVER — The Priest River volleyball team is continuing their winning streak after two more games.

Thursday, Sept. 25 Priest River visited St. Maries, winning by 25-8, 25-14 and 25-9.

Jayda Storro had 23 assists, six ace serves and seven kills for Priest River. She led offense alongside Aleigha Jensen, who had seven kills and five ace serves, and McKinley Burgess-Duquette, who had six kills. On defense, Kenadie Kingery had two blocks, while Jensen, Hadley Sandau and Rylee Dixon had one each. Toni Marinello and Burgess-Duquette led in digs with 11 and eight, respectively.

The Spartans then visited the Newport Grizzlies for a rematch, which Priest River won by 25-21, 21-25, 25-15, 22-25 and 15-10. (See separate story.)

Priest River is next visiting Kellogg at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7.

Selkirk volleyball recovers with another win

METALINE FALLS — The Selkirk High School volleyball team won their game against Columbia-Hunters last week, after losing two of three games the week before.

The Rangers visited Columbia- Hunters Lions Thursday, Sept. 25, coming home with a win in three sets 25-12, 25-23 and 25-9.

They next visited Inchelium Tuesday, Sept. 30, after The Miner’s weekly deadline. Later this week Selkirk visits Cusick at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, before hosting Kettle Falls next week at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6.
