Grizzlies are off and running

NINE MILE FALLS – Newport High School’s cross-country team competed at the Lake Spokane Invite Saturday, Sept. 27 at Lakeside High. Sophomore Olivia Collins won fourth place with a time of 20:50 in the girls’ varsity 5,000-meter race. Classmate Sophia Peaker placed 44th at 24:33. Senior Savannah Garris was 66th at 26:02. Junior Kasey St. Andre was 89th at 28:26. Classmate Aurelia Johnson was 90th at 28:28.

For the boys’ varsity race, senior William Rhineford placed 76th with a time of 21:46. Donovan Mason, also a senior, was 78th with a time of 21:54.

Newport girls broke the top 10 at the District 6 2B League Meet at St. George Wednesday, Sept. 24. Aimee Busby took fourth place at 21:41, with Collins placing seventh at 21:57 in the varsity girls’ race. Peaker took placed 23rd with a time of 25:04. Garris was 35th at 27:52. St. Andre placed 41st at 28:22.

William Rhineford was 41st at 22:05, followed by Mason in 42nd at 22:06 for Newport boys. Freshman Elijah Sattleen was 64th at 25:50. Logan Rhineford was 84th with a time of 44:13. Newport came in eighth overall with a score of 296.

Newport competed at the NE2B League Meet at 49 Degrees North Mountain Resort Tuesday after the newspaper deadline. Next up, the Grizzlies travel to the Spokane Polo Grounds for the 8th Annual Battle for the 509 Saturday, Oct. 4.
