CURLEW – The SelPort Lumberjack football team is improving, but still struggling to get a win. They fell 44-14 in an away game Friday night, Sept. 26.

“I thought we played better than we did the week before although the score isn’t indicative of it,” SelPort coach Kelly Cain says.

Curlew drew first blood in the first quarter with a 25-yard touchdown run, going up 8-0 after the 2-point conversion.

The Cougars broke another 40-yard TD run in the second quarter but were stopped on the extra points attempt.

The Lumberjacks got on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter when Jaxson Chantry connected with Danny Searson on a 62-yard pass play for a TD but were stopped on the extra points run.

Curlew answered with a short touchdown run and successful 2-point conversion to take a 22-6 lead at the half.

The Cougars scored a pair or rushing TDs in the third quarter before adding another 55-yarder in the fourth quarter. SelPort got in the endzone one more time on a 1-yard Charlie Anderson run and completed a Searson to Blaine Rickers pass for two points.

“The boys continue to keep a good attitude and are improving,” Cain says.

Curlew managed to largely shut down the Lumberjacks rushing game, holding the Lumberjacks to 69 yards on the ground. Rickers had 22 yards on 19 carries. Anderson carried eight times for 13 yards and the touchdown, Chantry ran for 4 yards on his only run, and Searson rushed for 31 yards on 10 carries. He had the one reception for 62 yards and a touchdown and threw four times, completing two for 27 yards.

Chantry had three completions and the TD on five attempts. He also caught a pass for 7 yards.

Johnny Oberholtzer had four tackles, including one for a loss. Slate Parker also had four tackles, including two pass breakups. Chantry was in on three tackles, including two solo tackles.

Next up for the Lumberjacks is a trip to Odessa for a game Friday, Oct. 3, that starts at 7 p.m.
