It is a quirky mystery program where teens become pickle pathologists. Each participant gets a “deceased” dill pickle and must investigate the bizarre “cause of death” using clues, creativity and a bit of fake forensic fun.

PO libraries hosting cider pressing

NEWPORT — The Pend Oreille County Library District, in partnership with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, will be hosting “Cider and Pie and Bears, Oh My!” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Usk Community Hall as a part of WDFW’s ongoing bear abatement efforts.

Community members are invited to bring apples from their yards or public trees to press them into cider. The Calispel Valley Library has an apple picker that can be checked out before the event to get hard-to-reach apples. Participants should bring their own containers to take home fresh cider.

In addition to cider pressing, there will be an apple- based food contest. Participants are invited to bring their best apple recipes, from pies to cobblers to salads, to enter a taste contest and vote for the winner.

Entry forms are available at the Calispel Valley Library or email [email protected] to have one sent to you.

For questions, email the Calispel Valley Library at calispel@ pocld.org or call at 800-366-3654, extension 2.
