I have almost 40 years in emergency management. During those years I have been directly involved with all public safety entities.
What is your position on the county forming an Emergency Medical Services district?
I am against this. The reason I am, is because there is not buy-in from the City of Newport and SPOFR, which account for the south part of the county. The reason for the formation of the EMS district would be so that an EMS level vote can be placed to the citizens of the county. I am against paying an additional tax and do not believe the voters would support it. We already have experienced increase in property taxes for the citizens of Pend Oreille County.
How would you attract more volunteers? Attracting volunteers is an issue nationwide. Initial training requirements and requirements beyond, as well as home and work responsibilities, make it problematic. But the key to volunteering comes down to the need to feel appreciated and needed by the community. This comes from a culture of the agency that we take care of our citizens, which in a small county could very easily be a friend or a family member.
