IONE – The SelPort Lumberjacks’ defense kept SelPort in the game against Wellpinit (3-2, 2-1) at home at Selkirk Friday, Oct. 10. But turnovers still hurt, SelPort coach Kelly Cain says. Wellpinit got the 44-12 win.

“Our D played well overall,” Cain says. But the offense had trouble executing consistently. “We committed four turnovers in the first half.”

That included two misplayed onside kicks, he says. Still the turnovers only cost the Lumberjacks 20 points.

The offense started playing better in the second half.

“It was understandable to struggle a bit offensively as we were using our third and fourth string QBs who were seeing their first action of the season,” Cain says. The starter, Jaxon Chantry is out because of a concussion and Danny Searson missed the game.

Sophomore Brayden Tucker started the game but was shaken up in a tackle he made a on defense. That left eighth grader Logan Maupin.

“Both of them had to have crash courses on how to play the position this week and so our play calling was a little limited,” Cain says. “With that being said I believe that they showed some real toughness and grit. Their play improved throughout the night and I’m excited to see their growth this next week after gaining a little experience.”

SelPort (0-5) is at home in Ione again next week for their homecoming game with Cusick (1-4, 1-2). That game Friday, Oct. 17, starts at 7 p.m.
