PRIEST RIVER — The Priest River Lamanna Senior High School volleyball team ended their season with one loss, but two wins last week.
With two more 3A Central Idaho League wins bringing the Spartans to 14 wins and two losses, Priest River is the No. 2 seed entering the 3A District 1-2 tournament. The opponent, time and date of the Spartan’s first round matchup have yet to be announced.
They lost to Kellogg in an away game Monday, Oct. 7 in four sets 14-25, 25-21, 11-25 and 18-25.
“Honestly we played better than we did the first time we saw Kellogg,” Priest River coach Katlyn Ward says. “We made them lose a set and I will take that as improvement.”
McKinley Burgess-Duquette still led in hits with 10 kills, alongside Raygn Turner’s six, Aleigha Jensen and Rylee Dixon’s four and Toni Marinello’s two. Dixon added three blocks, while Marinello and Burgess-Duquette added eight and 11 digs to Callie Stanger’s 11. Jayda Storro led in both assists and ace serves with 28 and two.
The Spartans’ first win was against Orofino, who they visited Friday, Oct. 10. Priest River won in three sets 25-14, 25-15 and 25-23.
“We had a great time,” Priest River coach Katlyn Ward says. “Lost a bit of momentum in set three but we had the pedal to the metal the entire time.”
Four Spartans led as hitters: Burgess-Duquette with 10 kills, Turner with six, Jasmine Stark with four and Jensen with four. Jensen and Burgess- Duquette also led in blocks alongside Rylee Dixon, as each had one. Storro added 26 assists, Stanger added six digs and Turner added three ace serves.
The Spartans won again last week against Grangeville, who they visited Saturday, Oct. 11. Priest River won in five sets 16-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-11 and 15-9.
“Took us a few sets to wake up,” Ward says. “But we woke up!”
Turner continued to lead in hits with 15 kills and in ace serves with four. Leading in defense were Kenadie Kingery, Storro and Dixon, who had five, five and three blocks, and Toni Marinello, Burgess-Duquette, Stanger and Turner again, who had 12, 12, nine and seven digs. Storro also added 28 assists.
