Tough loss for Cusick

INCHELIUM – The Cusick Panthers football team ended up on the short end of a 74-68 shootout at Inchelium (5-0, 5-1) Friday, Oct. 10.

“We dominated the line of scrimmage and time of possession,” Cusick coach Dustin Person says.

Cusick had plenty of offense but couldn’t get enough stops against the league leading Hornets.

“We let this one slip away from us,” Person says, with the secondary giving up too many TDs.

Panther quarterback Kaden Person completed 11 of 15 passes, with five passing touchdowns. Daniel Lyon caught two of those passes, Steven Mathis caught two for scores and Judah Sutton caught one.

Sutton led the Panthers in rushing, with three rushing touchdowns. Lyon also had a rushing touchdown before he had to leave at halftime because of concussion protocol.

“That limited our offense in the second half,” Person says. Still, the Panthers had some big minutes from freshmen players, he says.

Next up for Cusick (1-2, 1-4) is an away game with SelPort (0-5, 0-5) at Selkirk Friday, Oct. 17. That game starts at 7 p.m.

Cusick volleyball beats Inchelium

CUSICK — The Cusick High School volleyball team won again last week in an away game against Inchelium, who they defeated in four sets.

That put the Panthers at third in the Northeast 1B North league, with five wins and two losses.

Cusick next visited Northport Tuesday, Oct. 14 after The Miner’s weekly deadline. Later this week they have two more games, the first of which is against Columbia at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16 at home. The Panthers visit Republic and Curlew for the second and third games, at noon and 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18.

Next week Cusick visits Selkirk for a rematch at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21. The Rangers lost to the Panthers in another game earlier in the season.

Selkirk volleyball wins again

METALINE FALLS — The Selkirk High School volleyball team took another win while hosting Kettle Falls Monday, Oct. 6, winning after four sets 16-25, 25-11, 25-20 and 25-23.

The game was great, Selkirk coach Kristal D’Uva says. Kettle Falls had the numbers for Selkirk to play three full teams.

“All of our girls got court time and we are extremely grateful for that,” D’Uva says. “Kettle as always was a great team to have visit, the coaches and girls are always friendly and kind.”

The Rangers next hosted Columbia Tuesday, Oct. 14 after The Miner’s weekly deadline.

This week they visit Northport at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15. Selkirk then has two away games Saturday, Oct. 15, the first against Curlew at noon and the second against Republic at 4 p.m. Next week, the Rangers rematch the Cusick Panthers at home at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21.
