NEWPORT — The Newport High School volleyball team won another game last week when they hosted St. George’s last Tuesday, Oct. 7, taking three sets 25-16, 25-10 and 25-16.
That puts the Grizzlies third in the Northeast 2B North league, with seven wins including last Tuesday’s and two losses.
Newport had a great night at home, playing well and continuing to improve, coach Kathy Eggleston says.
“They stepped on the court with goals and put in full effort working towards them.” Eggleston says. “We’ve still got some areas of improvement but this team is willing to put in the work.”
Bella Boyd found the gaps in St. George’s defense, adding four kills and one ace serve.
Kaylia Earl continued to be a force with eight kills, six digs and two ace serves, Eggleston says. Lily Jenkins had three assists, three digs, two kills and one block, and Grace Parry placed her hits well with 12 kills and one dig.
Strong servers that night were Lindsay- Rose Collison, Samantha Tellessen and Kenna Arthur, who each went on long serve runs and were collectively responsible for 51 of the Grizzlies’ good serves, Eggleston says. Collision also added six kills, four blocks, four digs and three ace serves, Tellessen eight assists, two kills, two digs and two ace serves and Arthur 19 assists, five digs, one kill and one ace serve.
Genica Kreider performed great defensively with six digs and excellent serve receive, Eggleston says. Grace Keck and Abby Martin added three digs each.
“Overall we are really hitting our stride, they are moving well together,” Eggleston says. “It’s nice to see how excited they get for each other and the encouragement they give our two freshmen.” The Grizzlies had another game against Northwest Christian Tuesday, Oct. 14 after The Miner’s weekly deadline.
They next host Davenport at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, then Kettle Falls at noon Saturday, Oct. 18. Both are rematches; earlier this season, Newport lost against Davenport but won against Kettle Falls.
