Youth sports group season tourney Saturday

NEWPORT – The season ending soccer tournament for the Pend Oreille Sports Association will take place Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Stratton Elementary School field in Newport.

POSA, a 501 C 3 nonprofit, has rebranded as the Pend Oreille Pines. Saturday will mark a celebration of teamwork, growth, and community across every Pines age group, the group’s website proclaims.

There are 225 youth participating in the fall soccer program, says Pines president Tim Chilcott.

Throughout Saturday there will be matches leading to season championship games, capped by an awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m. at the Newport High School football field. Division champions will get trophies and all players will get Pines certificates and commemorative pins, team pizza and coach-led player recognitions following the ceremony.

If it rains, the ceremony will be moved indoors.

The Under 4, U6 and U8 age divisions are largely teaching divisions. They will play their regular games Saturday.

While the older ages are also teaching divisions, there will be competitive games.

U10 Division games start at 9 a.m., with the championship game at 11:30 p.m.

U12 Division also get underway at 9 a.m., with the championship game at noon.

U14 play will be a round robin tournament consisting of two 10-minute halves with a 5-minute overtime, with five rounds.

Play will start at 10 a.m., with round five at 12:55 p.m.

One of the highlights of the day will be at 3 p.m. when high school Club Pines team takes on Storm FC of Spokane. Chilcott says the idea is to develop a fall soccer program for high school students. In Spokane there are club teams for fall play.
