Panthers head to Regional Championships

SPOKANE VALLEY - Cusick cross-country runners represented at the District 6 1B Championships at Valley Christian High Friday, Oct. 17. Richard Sandwick, a junior, placed sixth with a time of 17:29 in the boys’ 5,000-meter varsity race. Nick Sandwick was 13th with a personal record (PR) of 18:34. Fellow freshman James Lilya was 41st with a PR of 20:55.

Next up is the District 6 1B/2B Regional Championship Friday, Oct. 31 in

Colfax.

McLaimtaig claims first place

RIVERSIDE – Priest River freshman Tadhg Mc-Laimtaig won first place in the boys’ 5,000-meter freshman race during the cross-country Inland Northwest Small School JV Champs at Riverside High School Saturday, Oct. 18. There were seven teams that competed, including Priest River.

Up next, the Spartans host the District I-II 3A Championship at Ranch Club Golf Course in Priest River Thursday, Oct. 23. Boys’ varsity starts at 3 p.m. and girls’ varsity starts at 3:45 p.m.

Grizzly girls beat Lady Knights

NEWPORT – Lady Grizzly soccer got a 2-1 victory over Chesterton Academy at an away game Thursday, Oct. 16. Newport’s Delaney Brandtner scored unassisted in the fourth minute, the Brandtner followed it up with another goal in the 23rd minute, with an assist by Emelia Wacenske. The Knights’ Vivian Craven responded with a goal in the 48th minute, but Newport cinched the win with 16 shots on goal to Chesterton’s five. Newport had four saves and Chesterton had 11.

Newport lost to Freeman 11-0 at home Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Newport hosted Davenport Oct. 21 after deadline. The Grizzlies host Reardan Thursday, Oct. 23 and then travel to Kettle Falls Tuesday, Oct. 28. Both games start at 4 p.m.

Selkirk volleyball wins one of four

METALINE FALLS — The Selkirk High School volleyball team won only the first of four recent games.

That places Selkirk at fourth in the Northeast 1B North league with four wins and five losses.

The Rangers won against Columbia 4-1 Tuesday, Oct. 14 at home. Their first loss was Wednesday, Oct. 15 in an away game against Northport, who won in three sets 25-17, 25-10 and 25-18. Selkirk lost twice more Saturday, Oct. 18, the first 3-2 visiting Curlew and the second in three sets visiting Republic.

The Rangers hosted Cusick Tuesday, Oct. 21 after The Miner’s weekly deadline.

They end their season with three more games this week. Selkirk visits Wellpinit at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, then hosts two schools, Northport and Inchelium, at noon and 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25.
